Jam of the Week #53: Number One

My Tuxedo tape has fully come back into the rotation at home… such good vibes off this record from 2 hella hard-working artists, Jake One & Mayer Hawthorne.

“We always wondered what the original sample was for “Ain’t No Fun.” Since we couldn’t figure it out, we decided we would make it.”

Also turns out they got Snoop’s blessing for this rework and Nate Dogg tribute.

Jam of the Week #51: the year I became a mutherfuckin’ G

Busdriver – the year I became a mutherfuckin’ G from the 2018 Electricity is on our Side LP

I almost feel like I have to post this to move past it living in my head 24/7. I LOVE this track, the vibe, the literal hype shit, the harder-to-figure-out raps, the guest spots that feel like people really trying to make a dope song together and not just emailing verses around, and that it feels like Busdriver shooting for something new in his art.

Hope you dig 🧡💙

What’s your OST?

One of the weird things about getting older is a feeling of detachment from newer music, especially compared to stuff I love from a few years back.

We all have records that were huge for us earlier in life.  I don’t like to say when we were becoming who we are because that seems like an excuse to be done learning, growing and changing. But something about these albums touched us in a really special way.

I’ve been trying to make some space in life lately so I’m selling a few records I rarely bump. Turned out a few of the newer People Under the Stairs records I own but never connected with (timing/life/my bad?) are worth a bit of dough. Since I’m in my second week of working freelance you already know they’re up on Discogs (unlimited $5 shipping!)

Anyways this got me bumping one of my favorite albums of all time: PUTS – O.S.T

The last week has been so cool thanks to this!  I constantly have songs from it playing in my head – bringing me right back to the dope feelings I had when I first heard it on Radio K (MPLS) through a tiny radio duct-taped to the forklift I was working on. Total magic ✨

It’s giving me lots of energy and joy and is showing me (with the benefit of some years) how much this record shaped me, the crew, and the art we made and still make.

What’s an album that feels this way to you? Try playing it on for a week or so and see if it hypes you up.

We all listening to new/digital music (which is such an amazing resource) but then there’s that moment you stopped paying attention and Soundcloud moved to a yoga vibes coffee shop station without asking.

Take back your vibe and see what it feels like to bump something you really love.

Send me your album I’d love to hear it! ☮

Jam of the Week #36: D’Evils

D’Evils by SiR from November (2018)

I’ve had this in my head since catching the TDE tour in Phoenix a week ago. Turns out singing ‘life is so much better when you live in slow motion’ over and over feels really good and actually slows shit down!

Love this track. Love this dude. Love you.

Jam of the Week #35 : Montara

Montara by Madlib off the 2003 Shades of Blue LP

I find myself randomly singing this loop and feeling so uplifted by it! Grateful it has a permanent home in my dome. Hope you dig hearing it for the first time or rediscovering the magic.

Madlib is so epic he gets taken for granted… at least that’s what happens in my collection. If I think about some of my favorite music of all time, most of it has a direct or indirect link to the loopdigga.

Jam of the Week #28: Spirits of the Ancestors

Spirits of the Ancestors by Josef Leimberg of the 2016 Astral Progressions (recently released on cassette!)

This is a mind-blowing awaking song that I’ve played probably over 50 times right when I wake up. I love what an incredible lead-in to my morning routine it is.

I was lucky enough to see it performed live last fall! They started out the show to it as the sun was setting at the outdoor LA venue. Total magic!
